A simple trick that could save your food — and your health!
Summer is here again, and many of us are counting down the days until vacation… the time we all look forward to.
But before you leave home and fill your fridge or freezer with food, there’s one small trick you should definitely do first.
It’s simple, but it can also tell you whether the food in your freezer is still safe to eat when you return.
The reason? Power cuts can happen while you’re away — and you may never even know about them.
If the electricity goes off for several hours, frozen food can start to thaw and then refreeze again. This process can spoil many types of food without any obvious signs.
So here’s the trick you should try before leaving home:
Fill a cup with water and place it in the freezer until it turns completely solid.
Once frozen, place a coin on top of the ice and put it back in the freezer.
When you return from your trip, check where the coin is:
• On top → Everything is fine. Your food stayed frozen the whole time.
• In the middle → There may have been a short power outage, but most food is likely still safe.
• At the bottom → The freezer likely defrosted completely at some point. You should throw away the food.
It’s a quick, easy method that helps you understand what happened while you were away — and could save you from eating spoiled food.
