NORTH CODORUS, Pa. (AP) — Three police officers lost their lives and two were seriously hυrt Wednesday in southern Pennsylvania during a follow-up to a domestic investigation. Authorities said the suspect also lost his life after police intervened.
Gov. Josh Shapiro called it “a tragic and devastating day,” mourning the service of the officers. Schools in the area were briefly sheltered in place, and condolences quickly spread from law enforcement agencies and community members, with flowers placed at the Northern York Regional Police Department.
Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Christopher Paris promised a thorough investigation, while Attorney General Pamela Bondi said federal agents were assisting. Emergency vehicles formed a procession to the coroner’s office as people lined the road with American flags.
The two injured officers were in critical but stable condition at York Hospital. Authorities have not released the names of the officers or the suspect, citing the ongoing inquiry.
Neighbors described hearing many shots and seeing helicopters and police vehicles rush to the rural scene. Shapiro emphasized the need for stronger support in mental health and conflict resolution, saying: “We must do better as a society so we don’t face tragedies like this.”
